What is Hanköy?

Hanköy! is a fully student-run High School hackathon, taking place in Philadelphia, PA, on October 12 - 13, 2019. Hanköy! is organized by students part of a high school CompSci club, known as Hack Club. During the event, participants will have 24 hours to collaborate on software projects, which will then be judged by a panel of judges, with chances to win cool prizes.

It started as a meme...

The idea for Hanköy! started from memes that were circulating around the Hack Club community. Mainly, it came from two big memes which sprang to life within the same few days. The first, appeared when Max Wofford from Hack Club HQ, made a post about "Bank of Hack" shortly before the release of Hack Club Bank. "Bank of Hack" became "Hank" after the combination of the two words "bank" and "hack" Hank took flight. The second meme, originated when a mysterious user called "Oy", who is an oyster, appeared on the Hack Club slack and recited the simple phrase "Oy!". This, in a similar way to Hank, spread like wildfire. A few days later, the idea of a hackathon with Hank and Oy started to be thrown around, and just a few hours later, Hanköy! was born.
